Made By Hand: Mats Bergsmeden, Jenny Granlund, Olav Westphalen
2013, May 16 - August 24
Galleri Charlotte Lund is delighted to present “Made by Hand”, an exihibition featuring drawings by artists Mats Bergsmeden, Jenny Granlund and Olav Westphalen.
MATS BERGSMEDEN (b. 1957 in Stockholm) takes in a series of new drawings his cue from Le Courbusier’s visionary architecture and the kind of graphical patterns found in city planning. In these labyrinthine images the viewer is guided through a graphical landscape where the lightness of water colours contrast with the sharp blackness of ink. The drawings look abstract but conceal both patterns from, and hidden references back to the world of architecture.
Mats Bergsmeden graduated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, in 1992, and works both wih photopgraphy, sculpture and drawing. He has had solo exhibitions at the Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki, and Konstnärshuset, Stockholm, among other places, as well as having participated in group exhibitions at Röhsska Museet, Gothenburg, and Mia Sundberg Galleri, Stockholm. Mats Bergsmeden has also made several commissions for public art, most recently at Nya Karolinska Sjukhuset, Solna, Stockholm, which will be inaugurated in 2013.
JENNY GRANLUND (b. 1972 in Trollhättan) makes large pencil drawings in which patterns, both of her own creation and ones that she has copied, are superimposed and intertwine, producing landscapes of pattern. In her two new drawings in the exhibition, abstract patterns and figurative elements mix. The various elements overlap and sometimes conceal one another, but when you look closer you see that the layers beneath shines through. The titles, which are both original and poetic, affords the drawings both a humorous and thoughtful dimension.
Jenny Granlund graduated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, in 2002, and is one of Galleri Charlotte Lund’s regular artists. She has had solo exhibitions at Galleri F15, Moss, Norway; Grafiska Sällskapet, Stockholm, and Gävle Konstcentrum, among other places, and is also represented at Uppsala Konstmuseum, Statens konstråd and at number of municipal collections. Between May 2013 and May 2014 Jenny Granlund’s drawings will be shown at the Stockholm underground station Slussen as part of SL:s project “Konstväxlingar-svartvita bilder” with the titel “Universums krökta rum och mänskliga felsteg”.
OLAV WESTPHALEN (b. 1963 in Hamburg) works both with sculpture, painting, drawing and cartoon. ”Made by Hand” features a selection from Olav Westphalen’s Do-Over Drawings. In this ongoing work group Westphalen draws, and re-draws and re-draws again a range of different images. His methods are casual and playful, but they keep circling back to something he calls “manual reproduction” (in distinction from Benjamin’s “mechanical reproduction.”) The images that receive such repetitive reiteration are mostly cartoon-like brush drawings, executed in a visual shorthand suggesting wit and inventiveness. Another recurring element are bursts of expressive gestures. Both of these formal languages rub uneasily against the systematic, doggedly production-oriented attitude of the Do-Over Drawings. The results can be funny, beautiful or plain tragic and at at times they acquire an unexpected political undertone.
Olav Westphalen (b. 1963 i Hamburg) has studied at the University of California, and today lives in Stockholm where he is a professor at the Royal Institute of Art. He has exhibited at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Galerie Vallois, Paris; and Milliken Gallery, Stockholm and is represented at Centre Pompidou, Paris; Dallas Museum, Dallas and MoMA, New York.
During the course of the exhibition the gallery will organize a guided showing of the exhibition.
